Meander (menderes), Büyük Menderes nehrinin eski adından (Maíandros) türetilen bir sözcük; “dolambaç, kıvrılarak akan su” anlamına geliyor. Şerit biçiminde tekrar eden geometrik kıvrımlardan oluşan bu tip motiflere de bu isim verilmiş. Geometrik Dönem Yunan vazo sanatında (MÖ 900-700) en önemli dekoratif motif olan meander hem Yunan hem de Roma sanatında (sonsuz çeşitlemelerle) bordürlerde, mimaride, giysilerde de sürekli olarak kullanılmış.

The meander motif is characterized by a continuous line that creates interlocking or repeating geometric forms. "The word "meander" comes from the river Maíandros (now Menderes) in Turkey and means "to follow a winding course." These designs were a key feature in Greek art during the Geometric Period (900–700 BC) and continued in Greek and Roman art. Meander motifs appeared in vase painting, borders, architecture, and clothing, showcasing endless variations of the pattern.
